L’exposició, organitzada per la Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia i lʼAxel and May Vervoordt Foundation amb la col·laboració de la Galeria Toni Tàpies, està comissariada per Toni Tàpies, Natasha Hébert, Daniela Ferretti i Axel Vervoordt.

Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923-2012) was deeply interested in existential questions. His passion for art was directly related to his need to understand the mysteries of life and his desire to capture the enigmatic nature of art. The exhibition in the Palazzo Fortuny will show an important selection of Tàpies’ work in the broader context of his own private art collection, within the intimate setting of the house of Mariano Fortuny – a fellow eclectic collector.

The aim of the exhibition is to show the spirit of Tàpies’ art and to present his extraordinary eye, both as a collector and an artist. Works from his private collection 20th century masters such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Kazuo Shiraga and Franz Kline, will be presented alongside ancient oriental and tribal sculptures. Also on display will be several important art books produced by Tàpies in collaboration with writers and poets. Works by a number of prolific living artists will be presented as a tribute to Tàpies. These artists include Giovanni Anselmo, Perejaume, Anthony Caro, Antoni Llena or Giuseppe Penone.

The catalogue (SKIRA, 2013) will present all the works in the exhibition. It contains essays by Natasha Hébert, Toni Tàpies and Axel Vervoordt.
