1993
He travels to New York for the opening of his solo exhibition at the Pace Wildenstein Gallery. In June he attends the opening of the Biennale di Venezia, XLV Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte, and presents his work Rinzen – winner of the Leone d’Oro – at the Spanish Pavilion. In Frankfurt, the Schirn Kunsthalle presents a retrospective exhibition of his work. Publication of Valor de l’art, a fifth collection of his writings. UNESCO awards him the Picasso Medal. The Fundació Antoni Tàpies presents the exhibition Tàpies. Celebració de la mel in Barcelona. Publication in Sankt Gall of the book Brodsky/Tàpies, with texts by Joseph Brodsky and lithographs by Tàpies. Takes part in the exhibition Manifeste. Une histoire parallèle. 1960-1990 (Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris). Solo exhibitions in Leipzig, Madrid, Caracas, Narbonne, Vaduz, Zaragoza, Girona, Liechtenstein and Lund.

1994 Travels to Stockholm for the opening of his retrospective exhibition at the Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde. Presentation of a selection of his recent work done in Montseny during the summer in London (Waddington Galleries). The Palacio de Sástago in Zaragoza hosts the exhibition Antoni Tàpies. Obra gráfica 1947-1990. He is invested doctor honoris causa by Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona and honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. He receives the Herbert-Boeckl-Preis awarded by the Rupertinum Museum in Salzburg. He also receives the European Grand Prix for Graphic Work at the Graphic Arts Biennial in Slovenia, and the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France chooses Tàpies to occupy one of the fifteen places reserved for foreign associates. Travels to Paris to attend the opening of his retrospective exhibition at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume. Together with a hundred other artists and intellectuals he signs the manifesto promoted by the Coordinadora d’Entitats Cíviques to demand a stop to the environmental degradation of Montseny. Publication of the monographs Tàpies. Objetos del tiempo, by Gloria Moure, and Tàpies, by Démosthènes Davvetas. Solo exhibitions in Paris, Cologne, Hannover, Essen, Barcelona and Salzburg.

1995
Travels to New York for the opening of a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. At the same time, both the Pace Wildenstein Gallery and the Musée d’art moderne in Céret present selections of his recent works. He is awarded the National Visual Arts Prize by the Catalan Government. He travels to Paris for the official donation of his work Totes les coses (1994) to UNESCO. Designs the poster Solidaritat amb Bòsnia to contribute to the Mestres per Bòsnia and the Coordinadora de Comités d’Ajuda Obrera a Bòsnia campaigns. Solo exhibitions in Barcelona, London, Geneva, São Paulo, Berlin, Marburg, Zug, Madrid and Zurich.

1996
In the course of the year a major retrospective exhibition of his work tours various Japanese museums (Marugame Genichiro Inokuma, Kagawa; Nigata City Art Museum, Nigata; Gunma Museum of Modern Art, Gunma; Kirin Art Space Harajuku, Tokyo). He travels to Santiago de Compostela for the opening of his anthological exhibition at the Auditorio de Galicia; the exhibition subsequently travels to Lisbon (Centro Cultural de Belém). Tàpies is decorated by the President of the Portuguese Republic with the Cross of the Order of Santiago. Exhibits his new sculptures in bronze at the Waddington Galleries in London. Edicions T Galeria d’Art in Barcelona presents a show of his recent work. About forty drawings, many of them unpublished, produced between 1981 and 1994 are exhibited in Aix-en-Provence (Galerie d’Art du Conseil Général des Bouches-du-Rhône). The Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona inaugurates the ‘meditation room’ conceived by the artist and produced in conjunction with the architects Jordi Garcés and Enric Sòria. Takes part in the collective exhibition Face à l’Histoire, 1933-1996: L’artiste moderne devant l’événement historique (Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris). Solo exhibitions in Copenhagen, Lanzarote, Paris and Aix-en-Provence.

1997
He travels to Prato, in Italy, where the Museo Pecci hosts a retrospective exhibition of his work. Also attends the opening of his solo exhibition at the Galleria Christian Stein in Milan. He is awarded the Gold Medal by the Universidade de Porto. The Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover exhibits an extensive selection of his works produced between 1981 and 1997 and presented by Carl Haenlein; the show is subsequently presented in Krems, Austria. Solo exhibitions in Zaragoza, Frankfurt, Oporto and Zurich.

1998
The Fundació Antoni Tàpies opens the exhibition Tàpies. El tatuatge i el cos, a wide-ranging show of the artist’s works on paper and cardboard covering more than fifty years. New retrospective exhibition in Locarno (Casa Rusca, Pinacoteca Comunale). He is invested doctor honoris causa by the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts. The installation Rinzen, which won the Leone d’Oro when it was presented at the Biennale di Venezia in 1993, is acquired by the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) for its permanent collection. He produces seven etchings for the book ¿Tú?, a collaboration with Antonio Gamoneda. He travels to Madrid for the opening of his exhibition at the Galería Antonio Machón of thirty drawings from the series
Mira la mà. The Galeria Toni Tàpies in Barcelona shows a selection of his recent work. Solo exhibitions in Paris, Soria, Madrid, Miengo and Bilbao.

1999
The exhibition Tàpies. El tatuatge i el cos is awarded the Ciutat de Barcelona prize. He publishes L’art i els seus llocs, a volume of his own texts and his selection of reproductions of works of art from different times and cultures. Solo exhibitions in New York, Burgos, Logroño, Palma de Majorca and San Sebastián. Takes part in the exhibition L’Art médecin (Musée Picasso, Antibes).

2000
In Madrid for the opening of his retrospective exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, curated by Manuel J. Borja-Villel, which subsequently travels to Haus der Kunst in Munich. The Muzeum Narodowe in Cracow hosts the exhibition Tàpies. Certeses sentides. Both the Pace Wildenstein Gallery in New York and the Galerie Lelong in Paris present selections of his most recent work. He takes part in the exhibition Encounters. New Art from Old at the National Gallery in London, together with Balthus, Louise Bourgeois, Richard Hamilton, Jasper Johns, Bill Viola and Jeff Wall, among others. Solo exhibitions in Barcelona, Lüdenshied, Laval, Arcueil, Málaga and Silos.

2001
Travels to Paris, where the Bibliothèque Nationale de France presents a retrospective exhibition of his graphic work, Antoni Tàpies ou la Poétique de la matière. In the course of the year, selections of his recent work are shown in Zurich (Galerie Lelong), London (Waddington Galleries), Madrid (Galería Soledad Lorenzo) and Barcelona (Galeria Toni Tàpies). Solo exhibitions in Madrid, Buenos Aires, The Hague, Helsinki, Millau, Geneva and Girona.

2002
Designs the poster for Barcelona’s Festes de la Mercè. He is awarded the Premio Nacional de Grabado y Arte Gráfico (National Engraving and Graphic Art Prize) by the Calcografía Nacional and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid. In Antibes for the opening of his anthological exhibition Tàpies. La peinture au corps à corps (Musée Picasso). The Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona presents Tàpies. Escriptura material. Llibres, a retrospective exhibition of his work in the field of the collector’s book. The exhibition Tàpies. Certeses sentides is held throughout the year at Rabat, Tangiers and Casablanca, and later travels to Tunisia. Solo exhibitions in Lisbon, Porto, Granada, Madrid, Cascais, Fuendetodos, Pamplona, Oviedo and Paris.

2003
In Madrid he attends the opening of the exhibition Tàpies. Escritura material. Libros (La Casa Encendida).The exhibition Antoni Tàpies. Cos i llenguatge, organised by the Fundació Antoni Tàpies and the Diputació de Barcelona, begins a tour around different towns in Catalonia. The President of the French Republic appoints him to the rank of Commander in the Order of the Legion of Honour. Awarded the Premio Velázquez de las Artes Plásticas by the Spanish Ministerio de Educación y Cultura. In Lleida, he attends the opening of the new Centre d’Art la Panera, which begins its activities with the exhibition L’univers obert d’Antoni Tàpies. He produces the poster for the international symposium Jorge Semprún o las espirales de la memoria, organised by the Universitat de Girona and International Writer in Prison Day, commissioned by the Catalan Centre of the PEN Club. In Valencia, he attended the tribute paid him on the occasion of his 80th birthday by the Universitat de València and the Tres i Quatre publishing house. The Kunsthalle in Emden (Germany) presented the exhibition Tàpies. Werke auf Papier 1943-2003. Alfabet Tàpies, the documentary by Daniel Hernández, was released at the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya (Sitges). He was invested doctor honoris causa by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Solo exhibitions in Paris, Barcelona, New York, London and Madrid.
